Hello all!
Welcome to another glorious week of live music. This one spans a lot of genres, and I think there’s something for everyone.
Speaking of live music—did everyone get their Kaytranada tickets? Smile and nod, because it’s gonna be a great time. Also, did we check out the lineup for Concerts in the Park? Phantogram babyyyy—I’ll be at that one for sure. It seems like the city is prioritizing live music just as much as I do!
Without further ado, let’s jump in.
Monday, April 7th: Fruits! at Cafe Colonial - Fruits! is an experimental pop/indie rock artist with lots of slow, languorous guitar mixed with analog synths. This is a great group to start listening to now, because you’re getting in on the ground floor. There’s a great layered sound through the debut album—titled Fruits—a sort of gauzy sheen that creates a lovely imaginative vibe. It feels like you’re lying in the grass, looking up at the clouds. Listen for “A Snail in the Wind,” one of my favorites.
Tuesday, April 8th: Rauw Alejandro at Golden 1 Center - Puerto Rico is great at creating megastars, and Rauw Alejandro is definitely one of them. With five albums under his belt and multiple top-charting singles, this genre-blending star puts on a great show. Taking reggaeton and urbano and melding them with salsa and trapetón—plus the occasional ballad—isn’t easy, but Rauw makes it seem effortless, picking up collaborations with Anuel AA, Bad Bunny (two of our other Puerto Rican stars), and Laura Pasini.
He puts in the work to make fun, danceable music. Get the ticket—I bet you’ll enjoy the show. I’ve heard the production value on this tour is very cool.
Wednesday, April 9th: Maribou State at Ace of Spades - The number of notable names that have collaborated with Maribou State is astounding. I’ll list some: Alpines, Lana Del Rey, Fatboy Slim, Kelis, Ultraísta, and Khruangbin—plus more. That said, I don’t judge an artist by who they collab with but by the content of their music… and Maribou State passes the vibe check.
Chilled-out electronic music that inspires an uplifted mood and dancing feet. Their newest album, Hallucinating Love, is really quite good, and the slightly downtempo beats and sample-based songs make for a great live show. Enjoy this one—it’ll remind you why you like concerts, and you’ll forcibly remember that a lot of the time, people just want to have a good time together.
Thursday, April 10th: Vortxz at The Starlet Room - Indie bilingual rock band. Say that three times fast. I only got two times in before I slipped up.
Their music is a form of escapism and really conveys a theme and feeling of positivity for the most part—which we desperately need. There’s a the Strokes-esque quality to Vortxz, with vibrant guitar licks and keyboard solos. I love their newer single, “Call Me On The Phone”—it’s peppy and sweet. This is another band to take note of. I think they have staying power, and I genuinely like the music.
Friday, April 11th: Sleepychi plus more at Press Club - Come out to Press Club and enjoy some of Northern California’s up-and-coming rappers. Sleepychi makes fun and interesting rap—the beats are always engaging, and the lyrics and verses blend actual flow with inventive sound. There’s a bit of resemblance to early Chance the Rapper with the… noises. You know the ones.
But I enjoy this even more because of the vulnerability—it feels very authentic. A lot of it has the tone of a slow jam combined with lyrics that sit comfortably alongside more traditional rap. I think this night will showcase a lot of talent and would be a great way to see more of what NorCal hip-hop has to offer. Listen for “The Streets,” a mellow and vibey joint that makes you feel like summer is on the way.
Saturday, April 12th: 2nd 5th Anniversary Party for Torch Club - Now, the Torch Club has actually been around since 1934—but it’s moved locations. This is 25 years on 15th Street, for this party’s sake.
Torch Club will be hosting 16 artists starting April 11th and running through April 13th, including Peter Petty, The Band Hayez, Red’s Blues, and more. This is a great opportunity to come out and pay homage to a place where live music is the focus—so much so that it remains to this day the only venue in the city with live music twice a day, six days a week. Come celebrate that history and hear some great music.
No cover necessary before 9 PM but come with some tips for everyone!
Sunday, April 13th: Mvssie at Goldfield Trading Post Midtown - Some sort of successor to Hayley Williams—and I don’t make that comparison lightly! A pop-punk dive into hardcore, reminiscent of Flyleaf.
There are a lot of emotions in Mvssie’s music, and it feels good to hear someone say things so plainly. Grief and anger abound, with captivating melody—and the drums are always going hard in the background. It’s a good mix, one that’s been popular for ages, and it’s always satisfying to me when the guitar breaks out loudly. Listen for “self sabotage” which has some creative lyrics about burning it all down. If you’re angry about Monday coming up, go see her.
Forecasting for future shows!
Friday, April 18th: DEFEM at The Press Club - Get ready to jam the hell out! Join local superstars with the bio to prove it —"A band living in Sacramento”—this show will be a great return to performing in Sacramento for DEFEM and I personally cannot wait.
That’s all for this week! Thank you again for reading and as always, send this to someone you think might like it! And if you’re at all interested in keeping this going, feel free to drop me a little tip.
The defem show is for hot girls!
